Romantic Ireland is alive and well - she calls the shots, but he pays the bill...

21st century Irish couples are still in love with the traditional romantic break, but while she’s the one who chooses the destination and makes the booking, he is the one who pays the bill.

Manor House Hotels & Irish Country Hotels, Ireland’s largest group of independently owned hotels, has released the results of a survey of its 67 properties carried out in association with the AA.

It emerged that 61% of bookings for romantic breaks away are made by women. However, 68% of the time it is the man who pays the bill.

Mary Fitzgerald, Chairperson of Manor House Hotels & Irish Country Hotels said, “Perhaps it is a reflection on our traditional Irish Hotels that we see so much of the traditional Irish values. It is interesting to see that in modern Ireland, chivalry is still part of our daily lifestyle. In relation to the domestic holiday maker, it has always been evident from our Central Reservations office that, women are the most frequent bookers of romantic breaks away.”

The survey also shows that there is a growing demand for ‘clean weekends’, where a couple take time out from the kids to have a short break together. 76% of the Hotels surveyed agreed that there was an upsurge in couples taking a night or a weekend away without the kids.
