Phoenix Park Road Closure

Phoenix Park Road Closures

Major Closures are in place in Phoenix Park until the end of November and motorists are already feeling the impact to traffic on Carpenterstown Rd, Castleknock Rd and Knockmaroon Hill. Dublin commuters are urged to allow an extra 40 minutes journey time morning and evening for the duration of the works.

Castleknock Gate & Mountjoy roundabout in the Phoenix Park are closed until Sun 29th Nov (possibly reopening earlier). This is to upgrade the roundabout at Mountjoy Cross as well as some other work required on the gate and the area will remain open to cyclists and pedestrians throughout.

"Castleknock commuters and anyone who normally commutes through the Phoenix Park can follow diversions in the park but you are better off avoiding it entirely" said Nicola Hudson AA Roadwatch Controller "There will be restrictions on the Ashtown and Cabra gates allowing only one way traffic, while Furze rd and Odd Lamp Rd will carry diverted traffic but they are small roads and queues are expected at peak times"

Most drivers are heading the advice to avoid entering the park where possible, but unfortunately they have had to deal with an average 40 minute delays on the alternative routes.

Diversions at the Castleknock Gate will direct you in the Ashtown Gate, down Old lamp rd to the Phoenix Monument and out the Main Gate.

Coming from the Parkgate St entrance you will be diverted out the Cabra gate or the Knockmaroon gate so you are better off going around the park instead.

In addition, Ashtown Gate will only allow entry to the park, Cabra Gate will only allow exit from the park but traffic can go bothways through: Nth Circular Rd Gate, Main Gate on Parkgate St and Knockamroon Gate.

Traffic is affected in Castleknock, on Auburn Ave, the N3 Navan Rd and Cabra Rd, on Knockmaroon Hill, in Chapelizod and the Chapelizod Bypass and the Sth Circular Rd approaching Phoenix Park.

You are advised not use the park as a through route and only go in if that is your destination. VMS, warning and information signs will notify traffic on approach.

"Each morning in Dublin there are 650,000 journeys taken to work, 65 % of those journeys are by car, so when a major route is disrupted it’s easy to cause problems on surrounding routes" Nicola Hudson said "Right now just 18 % of Dublin commuters take public transport and motorists who use Phoenix Park now need to look at joining that minority. Dublin may not have public transport that compares with other European capitals but there are alternatives to the car."

Get cycling!

"If you live not far from Phoenix Park, this would be a great time to start cycling to work, the Castleknock gate will stay open for pedestrians and cyclists at all times" said Nicola "Traffic is guaranteed to suffer in Castleknock, Ashtown, the Navan and Cabra roads as well as Knockmaroon Hill and Chapelizod so this would be a great way to avoid taking the car altogether"

Take the Train!

"The Irish Rail Maynooth Line runs close to the park and you can get on at Castleknock station, the new Phoenix Park station or at Ashtown and that will bring you straight into Connolly Station" Nicola advised."You can connect to DART and Luas Red line services from there"
