AA Poll of 5,000 shows 27% of all Motorists are planning a shopping trip to the North

The AA has conducted a major survey of Motorist’s views. 5,000 motorists participated, and among the immediate findings is that 27.2% of people said that they would be visiting Northern Ireland for a shopping trip between now and Christmas.

Shopping in Northern Ireland

Everyone can see that people are attracted North by the weakness of sterling but this is truly an extraordinary number. Even if not everyone who has planned it manages to take the trip it is still clear that huge numbers are on the move with implications for traffic on particularly on the M1. This was borne out last weekend as AA Roadwatch reported long delays into Newry as large volumes of traffic poured up the new motorway from Dublin.

This is likely to become even more evident this weekend as the traditional shopping season really kicks off. If you are heading North allow plenty of extra time for your journey especially at the weekend.

The survey showed that of 5,000 respondents, 27.2% planned a Christmas Shopping trip to the North. 5.2% were planning to visit Britain, 4.4% planned a trip to Europe and 3.8% were planning a trip to North America.

Thanks to everyone who took part in the poll which gave us a great insight into motorists’ views. The results will be very important in strengthening our position when we are dealing with bodies like the Government, the RSA and the Garda. One thing seems clear – they must do a lot more to convince us that speed cameras will be used fairly.

There is also a great deal of interesting comments and info on the driving habits of Irish people. This will be a good way to get people talking about good driving and will hopefully encourage better behaviour out there.

Poll results have to be assessed carefully before we release them but more information and results will be issued in the coming weeks.
